ART DECO BOOK COVERS
I created 4 speculative book covers based on art deco aesthetics of the 1930's. To create these designs, I studied the design and fine art of the period and reimagined the covers of four books to reflect these trends. I utlized sharp shape language and central compositions to translate the feel of this era.

For the book cover of Memory Police, I wanted the central figure  to be the main character. This reflects the book's main themes. Red and orange were utilized to signify authority and structure.

The Archive Undying was created with grandiose show posters from the time period as key inspiration. This captures the sci-fi fantasy genre of the novel, featuring a mecha design central to the novel.

I utilized complimentary colors to create bold contrast between typography and visual imagery.

The Empress of Salt and fortune's main character is thematically tied to the rabbit, as well as the moon goddess in Chinese mythology. With this composition, I created a moon rabbit as the central focus of the theme. I kept typography relatively simple to emphasize design elements.

I visualized the process of decay and dissociation, themes of Study for Obedience's plot. Utilizing blocks of color and line, I explored the time periods exploration of simple graphical elements. With this book cover in particular, I drew heavy inspiration from art deco typography to inform my own type selections.

Together, these book covers create a cohesive whole emblematic of 1930's revolution of style and design. Each book cover utilizes different color and font themes, while following the same aesthetic guidelines.
For this project, I studied essential elements of book cover design; from QR code placement to spine measurements. I combined modern book cover trends with design sensibilities emblematic of the 1930's art deco period. The challenge with this assignment was to create a cohesive collection while maintaining the individual identities of the books included.

This project taught me key concepts of composition and color theory, as well as establishing a consistent style for a project.
